XMICC and 7 Oceanographic Institutes Signs a MOU Online
Under the guidance of Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Natural Resources of the PRC and led by Third Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources of the PRC, the signing ceremony for Memorandum of Understanding on Integrated Multidisciplinary Research for Marine Sustainable Development was recently held.
Ms. Cai Biling and Mr. Andrey G. KIM, the Chinese and Russian focal points of APEC Ocean and Fisheries Working Group (OFWG), witnessed the signing ceremony online.
Cai Feng, director general of Third Institute of Oceanography, Peng Wei, director general of National Ocean Technology Center, Lin Huaiyuan, chief engineer of Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Ocean Development, Chen Bin, vice director of Third Institute of Oceanography, Wang Xinhong, deputy director of College of The Environment and Ecology, Xiamen University, and Zhang Nong, director of Xiamen Marine International Cooperation Center (XMICC), attended the event at the Xiamen venue in person.
During the ceremony, eight ocean-related institutions and international organizations including the Pacific Oceanological Institute of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (POI FEB RAS), Scientific and Research Institute of Maritime Spatial Planning Ermak NorthWest, Russian Federation, International Centre for Social and Economic Research “Leontief Centre”, Russian Federation, Third Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources of the PRC, Xiamen University, Xiamen Marine International Cooperation Center, National Ocean Technology Center and APEC Marine Sustainable Development Center, jointly signed the memorandum of understanding (MOU) via an online conference.
According to the MOU, China and Russia will conduct cooperative research in the areas of climate change adaptation and mitigation, marine and coastal biodiversity conservation, integrated coastal management, marine spatial planning, blue economy, pollution prevention in the seas and oceans, marine disaster prevention and management.
It is noted that China and Russia have been carrying out marine cooperation and exchanges for many years under the framework of APEC. The signing of the memorandum will further promote practical cooperation in marine fields between both countries, making contributions to the better use of the platforms such as APEC Marine Sustainable Development Center and the World Ocean Week in Xiamen, as well as the participation in global ocean governance and blue partnership building.
