Xiamen Ocean Negative Emission Research Center unveiled
The Xiamen Ocean Negative Emission Research Center, the domestic executing agency for the Ocean Negative Carbon Emissions (ONCE) Programme, was recently unveiled in Xiamen, east China's Fujian Province.
The implementation of the ONCE programme in Xiamen is aiming to help establish an ocean negative emission demonstration zone and will play a leading role in the development of international carbon neutral technology.
"The programme is also expected to promote Xiamen as an international scientific research center in ocean science and climate change," added Luo Tingwei, director of the Xiamen Ocean Negative Emission Research Center.
"The theory of 'marine microbial carbon pump' means that the physiological and ecological processes of ocean microorganisms and biogeochemical processes convert organic carbon from the available active state, to the unavailable inert dissolved organic carbon, which holds the key to the mystery of ocean carbon pool,”said Hu Chen, an ONCE programme official.
Based on the original theory of "marine microbial carbon pump", the ONCE programme was initiated by Jiao Nianzhi, an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
It is learned that the programme is aiming to explore the mechanism of negative ocean emission process and provide solutions for global negative ocean carbon emission, with international cooperation and collaborative research.
In October 2022, the ONCE programme was officially approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China.
As of now, it was listed among key plans of "the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development", and has established partnerships with 79 scientific research institutions from 33 countries across the world.
It is noted that the unveiling of the Xiamen Ocean Negative Emission Research Center coincided with the launch of Ocean Negative Emission European Center, Ocean Negative Emission Pan-American Center and Ocean Negative Emission Asian Center at the same time.
