China-Pacific Island Countries Cooperation Symposium on Marine Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation held
The China-Pacific Island Countries Cooperation Symposium on Marine Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation was held in Pingtan, East China’s Fujian Province on November 8.
Xu Dachun, Vice-chairman of Ministry of Natural Resources of the People’s Republic of China, and Lin Wenbin, Vice Governor of the People's Government of Fujian Province, attended the event and delivered keynote speeches.
The event was also attended by more than 10 foreign guests from Solomon Islands, United Nations, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Samoa, along with over 180 experts and scholars from ocean-related institutions and organizations.
An inauguration ceremony of the Marine Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation affiliated center of the China-Pacific Island Countries Center for Disaster Risk Reduction Cooperation was held at the same time.
During the symposium, the Island Research Center, Ministry of Natural Resource signed a cooperative agreement with the Pacific Islands Forum. Besides, a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in tsunami warning was signed between National Marine Environment Forecasting center and Solomon Islands Meteorological Services Division.
The cooperation symposium was jointly hosted by Island Research Center, Ministry of Natural Resource, Administrative Committee of Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone of Fujian Province, Pacific Islands Forum and China Oceanic Development Foundation,and co-organized by Xiamen Marine International Cooperation Center and related institutions affiliated to Ministry of Natural Resource.
The 2023 International Island Forum was held earlier on the same day. More than 10 experts and 100 representatives took part in the forum, discussing the topics of climate change response, marine disaster prevention, blue economy building and global ocean governance.
