Lectures on marine science held in Xiamen
A series of activities to popularize marine science for local primary and secondary school students were held in Xiamen, East China’s Fujian province in April and May.
Members of Xiamen Maritime Lecturer Team visited four local primary and secondary schools, delivering lectures on marine science.
In Xiamen Gaoxin School, Dr. Lin Xin, an associate professor at the College of Oceanography and Earth Science of Xiamen University, presented the students with coral reef ecosystems.
In Chiway-Repton School Xiamen, Dr. Stephanie Steinke, a professor at the Department of Geological Oceanography of Xiamen University, told the story of planktic foraminifera, and Dr. Wu Haohao from the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science (MEL) shared the life cycle of various marine animals.
In Xiamen Meilin Middle School, Dr. Gu Xiaoxuan, a post-doctorate researcher at the Ocean Carbon Group of Xiamen University, explained the reason to value and strengthen the protection of the mangrove ecosystem.
In Xiamen Foreign Language School, Dr. Shi Dalin, a professor at the College of the Environment and Ecology of Xiamen University, shared the relationship between the ocean and global climate change.
Supported by the Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Ocean Development, the Xiamen Maritime Lecturer Team were jointly set up by the MEL, the 70.8 Media Lab and the Xiamen Marine International Cooperation Center, aiming at increasing the ocean literacy of local young people and their awareness of marine conservation.
