Ambassador of the Solomon Islands to China visits sea-related institutions in Xiamen
Accompanied by the officials from the Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Ocean Development, H.E. John Fugui, Ambassador of the Solomon Islands to China, and Mr. Mona Mato, Trade Commissioner of the Pacific Trade Invest (PTI) China visited the Xiamen-based Third Institute of Oceanography (TIO) of the Ministry of Natural Resources on September 9, 2022.
The visitors were first given a tour around the Key Laboratory of Global Change and Marine-Atmospheric Chemistry (GCMAC) where they were briefed the lab's scientific achievements in climate change.
Then, they had an exchange with officials from the local ocean development bureau, experts from the TIO and Fujian Institute of Oceanography (FJIO), and local business representatives about expanding marine cooperation.
Ambassador John Fugui said he had participated in the World Ocean Week in Xiamen before and had a better understanding of the city’s ocean development. Therefore, he is willing to help Xiamen-based marine enterprises with investment in Solomon Islands.
He welcomed overseas fishing companies in Xiamen to exploit fishery resources of his country and expected to cooperate with more local marine enterprises and scientific institutions.
Xiamen will fully tap into platforms including the World Ocean Week in Xiamen, the Xiamen Marine International Cooperation Center, and Xiamen International Seafood Exhibition to build bridges of communication and cooperation with scientific institutions and marine enterprises of the Solomon Islands and will work together to promote the sustainable development and utilization of fishery and tourism resources of both sides, an official from the local ocean development bureau said at the meeting.
