Forum discusses coastal zone management in Xiamen
The 2021 PNLG-PNLC Joint Learning Forum, sponsored by Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) was held via video link on Nov 18.
It's the first time that PEMSEA Network of Local Governments (PNLG) for Sustainable Coastal Development and PEMSEA study center (PNLC) have held a seminar during World Ocean Week, which started on Nov 18.
Noraini Binti Roslan, president of PNLG and Wansuk Senanan, president of PNLC delivered speeches at the forum.
Nearly 100 PNLG and PNLC representatives from countries including China, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Timor-Leste attended the online conference.
With the theme of promoting the implementation of a new type of integrated coastal zone management in the next decade, the forum was divided into three sections: application and promotion, tools and methods, and local experience of integrated coastal zone management.
Chua Thia-Eng, chair emeritus of the East Asian Seas Partnership Council, and Nancy Bermas, senior project manager of PEMSEA Sustainable Development Strategy for the Seas of East Asia delivered keynote speeches.
Representatives from the National University of Krabit in the Philippines, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategy in Japan, the University of the Philippines, Tangerang city in Indonesia and Da Nang city in Vietnam respectively shared their views on hot topics such as marine garbage management, the response to climate change and the best ways to protect biodiversity.
