The Workshop on Ecosystem-Based Integrated Management of Estuarine Areas was successfully held in Xiamen, East China’s Fujian Province on November 7, aiming to advance the application of ecosystem-based management approaches in estuary regions.

Held during the 2025 World Ocean Week in Xiamen, the event brought together over 50 participants from the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Shandong Provincial Department of Natural Resources, designated demonstration areas, and partner organizations.

During the workshop, participants shared multi-level experiences—from technological innovation to institutional coordination—on coastal wetland restoration, coastal zone management tools, international estuary governance, Xiamen's integrated land-sea initiatives, and the conservation of the Chinese white dolphin. The discussions highlighted capacity building, platform development, and community involvement to enhance integrated estuary management and international cooperation in China.

The workshop was supported by the FAO-GEF project entitled "Demonstration of Estuarine Biodiversity Conservation Restauration and Protected Area Networking in China." Since its launch, the Project has contributed to protected area coordination, information sharing, ecosystem restoration, and capacity building, providing technical support for biodiversity conservation in the Pearl River Estuary and the ecological restoration of the Yellow River Estuary.
