Themed ‘Empowering Disaster Prevention with Science and Technology’, the China-ASEAN Countries Marine Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Symposium was held in Xiamen, East China’s Fujian province on November 7.

Pan Xinchun, vice chairman and secretary general of China Oceanic Development Foundation, and Wan Xiaodong, deputy director-general of the Fourth Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources, attended the opening ceremony and delivered remarks.

Fourteen experts and scholars from China, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia were invited to give keynote speeches, centering on the topics of algal bloom control, coastal ecosystem restoration, stability assessment of coastal protection structures, space-based technologies for disaster management, sustainable development of blue citizen communities, and marine satellite remote technologies.

Participants also shared cutting-edge technologies and practical experiences, injecting new momentum into deepening China-ASEAN cooperation in marine disaster prevention and mitigation and building a maritime community with a shared future.

The China-ASEAN Countries Marine Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Symposium was jointly organized by China Oceanic Development Foundation and four institutes under the Ministry of Natural Resources (the Fourth Institute of Oceanography, National Marine Hazard Mitigation Service, Island Research Center, and the Third Institute of Oceanography).
