The BRICS Symposium on Marine Science opened in Xiamen, East China's Fujian province on November 7, 2025.

The event, held both online and offline, was attended by more than 40 participants from BRICS countries and BRICS partner countries, including China, Brazil, India, South Africa and Indonesia.

The symposium aimed to further deepen scientific and technological exchanges, strengthen partnerships, and build consensus on cooperation in areas such as the marine economy, industrial innovation, and sustainable development.

During the panel discussion, nine experts were invited to deliver themed speeches, centering on the topics of blue economy development, sustainable utilization of marine biological resources, marine biopharmaceutical technology, marine fishery resource conservation and development, coastal resource assessment, and deep-sea governance.

Co-founded by the Third Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources and Xiamen Marine International Cooperation Center, the BRICS Marine Sustainable Development Research Center was established on November 10, 2023.

Under the BRICS cooperation framework, the center is dedicated to promoting exchange and collaboration among BRICS countries in the fields of marine ecosystem conservation, sustainable utilization of marine resources, and the blue economy.

Under the guidance of the Administrative Center for China's Agenda 21 and the BRICS Partnership on New Industrial Revolution Innovation Center, the BRICS Symposium on Marine Science was jointly hosted by the Third Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources, the BRICS Marine Sustainable Development Research Center and the BRICS Deep-Sea Resources International Researcher Center.
