2020 World Ocean Week in Xiamen: Ocean Forums
1. 2020 World Ocean Week in Xiamen (WOW) Opening Ceremony and Marine Development Conference
The 2020 World Ocean Week in Xiamen (WOW) Opening Ceremony and Marine Development Conference was held at International Conference Hotel Xiamen on Nov 23. This event was co-hosted by the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Xiamen Municipal Party Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Xiamen Municipal People's government, and co-organized by the Secretariat of World Ocean Week in Xiamen, Xiamen Municipal Development and Reform Commission and Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Ocean Development. Mr. Wang Hong, Vice Minister of Natural Resources and Director of the State Oceanic Administration (SOA), and Mr. Hu Changsheng, Deputy Party Secretary of Fujian Provincial Committee and Party Secretary of Xiamen Municipal Party Committee of CPC, attended the meeting and delivered a speech. Mr. Peter Thomson, United Nations Secretary General's Special Envoy for the Ocean, delivered a video speech. Mr. Li Dejin, vice governer of Fujian Provincial People's Government presented the event. Mr. Huang Qiang, executive vice mayor of Xiamen, and Mr. Huang Yantian, vice mayor of Xiamen presided over the meeting. The event invited five provincial and ministerial leaders, one counselor of the State Council, more than 40 department level leaders, seven ambassadors to China and Consul General in Xiamen, four academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, more than 400 experts and scholars and well-known enterprise guests, while 68 projects were achieved at the conference, with a total investment of 35.5 billion yuan.

2. 2020 China Seafood Summit
The 2020 China Seafood Summit was held at Xiamen International Conference and Exhibition Center on Nov 23-25. This summit was hosted by China Aquatic Products Processing and Marketing Alliance (CAPPMA) and Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Ocean Development, co-organized by 42 industry associations, supported by six technology systems, three science and technology alliances, a number of aquatic universities, scientific research institutions, also attracted the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and other 13 overseas institutions as international co-organizers. The three-day-long summit attracted more than 1,000 participants, including experts, scholars, and business representatives from the aquatic industry, interdisciplinary guests, and journalists.
The meeting focused on the national "dual circulation" strategy, taking "Innovation, Cooperation and Mutual Benefit" as the theme, to seek new market opportunities in the post-pandemic era, deeply touched the pain point of the industry. Four main reports and 17 parallel sessions were held, attracting widespread attention and participation in the industry.

3. 2020 PEMSEA Network of Local Governments for Sustainable Coastal Development (PNLG) Annual Forum
The 15th PEMSEA Network of Local Governments for Sustainable Coastal Development (PNLG) Annual Forum was held at Xiamen International Seaside Hotel. It is the first time for the Forum to be held both online and offline on Nov 24. Over 120 people attended the Forum virtually or in person including the delegates from 39 PNLG members across nine countries including China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam, as well as the experts and scholars from PEMSEA, Xiamen University, CHINA - PEMSEA Sustainable Coastal Management Cooperation Center, Zhejiang University and Burapha University.
Themed "Marine Eco-civilization, Blue Development", the Forum encouraged the exchange of experience among the members through the General Assembly and the technical workshop, to accelerate the realization of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and promote the sustainable development of the East Asia Sea. This year, two new members joined PNLG, namely South Bangka Regency, Indonesia and Fujian Institute for Sustainable Oceans (Xiamen University). This brings the PNLG membership total to 51 regular members and three associate members.

4. Blue Economic Forum 2020
The Blue Economic Forum 2020 was held at Peony Harbor City Hotel on Nov 24. The forum was hosted by the National Marine Data and Information Service (NMDIS), Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Ocean Development, and organized by Marine Economy Branch of the Pacific Society of China (PSC) , Marine Strategic Planning and Economic Research Branch of China Association of Marine Affairs, Marine Statistics Branch of National Statistical Society of China, and Editorial Department of "Marine Economy". More than 200 representatives from subordinate units, coastal cities, sea-related universities, international organizations and sea-related enterprises attended the forum.
With the theme of "Blue Economy, Green Development", participants combined the development of economy and ecosystem to explore the strategy for marine sustainable development. They strived to converge achievements from different sides by building in-depth exchanges and pragmatic cooperation platform, to improve role of blue economy in ecological development, blue partnership and social development, and to build China into a country with strong maritime power.
5. Blue Partnership Seminar
The Blue Partnership Seminar was held at International Conference Hotel Xiamen on Nov 23. The seminar was hosted by the International Cooperation Department of MNR, and organized by the National Marine Data and Information Service. More than 20 representatives from the International Cooperation Department of MNR, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Conservation International (CI), the Nature Conservancy (TNC), the World Wide Fund for Nature or World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the Society of Entrepreneurs and Ecology (SEE), the World Economic Forum (WEF), the Coastal and Ocean Management Institute (COMI), Xiamen University, the National Marine Data and Information Service, the China Institute for Marine Affairs (CIMA) attended the seminar.
This seminar aims to further implement the important instruction of President Xi Jinping on "building a maritime community with a shared future" and "actively developing the blue partnership", to promote the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 14 and 17, as well as to explore solutions and build consensus for the establishment of an inclusive and flexible blue partnership.
6. 2020 Annual Academic Exchange Conference on the Major Research Initiative: "Mechanisms Underlining Elemental Cycling on the Earth by Microorganisms in Hydrosphere"
The 2020 Annual Academic Exchange Conference on the Major Research Initiative -- "Mechanisms Underlining Elemental Cycling on the Earth by Microorganisms in Hydrosphere" --- was held at Xiamen Wutong Fliport Hotel on Nov 22-25. This conference was hosted by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), organized by the College of Ocean and Earth Sciences (COE), Xiamen University. More than 340 participants from 58 units, exchanged, discussed and summarized the progress of the projects, and discussed the future directions of interdisciplinary study and key scientific issues of this major research initiative.
This conference gathered major sea-related research forces across the country, showed the research results of Xiamen University and other universities and scientific research institutions in related industries as well as the forefront leading role of Xiamen University and other participating units in the discipline and enhances its domestic and international influence. It will help expand Xiamen's influence in marine research, environmental protection, and resource development.
7. Symposium on Marine Sustainable Development and Regional Cooperation
The Symposium on Marine Sustainable Development and Regional Cooperation was held at Millennium Harbourview Hotel Xiamen on Nov 20-21. The symposium was host by the China Institute for Marine Affairs (CIMA), MNR and the School of Law, Xiamen University, organized by the South China Sea Institute of Xiamen University and the Marine and Military International Law Research Center, the School of Law, Xiamen University, and co-organized by the Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Ocean Development and Fujian Institute for Sustainable Oceans. More than 60 participants from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, MNR, National Cultural Heritage Administration, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, National Institute for South China Sea Studies, Ocean University of China, Sichuan University, Dalian Maritime University, Hainan University, Northwest University of Political Science and Law and Zhejiang Ocean University, attended the conference.
This symposium aims to systematically analyze the current situation and challenges of sustainable ocean development and regional cooperation, and try to make suggestions from a legal perspective for accelerating achievement of marine sustainable development and regional cooperation.
8. Workshop on Sustainable Oceans 2020
The Workshop on Sustainable Oceans 2020 was held at Millennium Harbourview Hotel Xiamen on Nov 21. The workshop was hosted by Xiamen University, China Oceanic Development Foundation, Fujian Provincial Bureau of Oceans and Fisheries, organized by Fujian Institute for Sustainable Oceans (Xiamen University), and co-organized by School of Marine Science and Technology of Tianjin University, Hainan Tropical Ocean University, the South China Sea Institute of Xiamen University, and Marine Civilization and Strategic Development Research Center of Xiamen University. Experts and scholars from more than 20 research institutes, government departments participated in the meeting.
With the theme of "discussion and experience sharing on the role of China's marine think tank in international and domestic marine governance and discussion on the construction of think tank", the workshop discussed the important role and significance of ocean think tank in building China into a country with strong maritime power, and explored means to improve China's participation and influence in global marine governance.
9. The 5th China Leisure-Fishery Forum
The 5th China Leisure-Fishery Forum was held with the theme of "Beautiful Fishing Village and Recreational Fishery in China" at Juntai Hotel Xiamen on Nov 24. The forum is supported by the Bureau of Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, National Fisheries Technology Extension Center, and Fujian Provincial Bureau of Oceans and Fisheries, hosted by China Society of Fisheries, China Recreational Angling Association, and Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Ocean Development, and organized by Xiamen Xintian Exhibition Co., Ltd. The forum aims to implement the requirements raised at the Meeting on Promoting National Fisheries Reform, Innovation and High-Quality Development, to discuss the development of leisure fishery industry in the new era, to build a discussion and exchange platform for officers, scholars and entrepreneurs, and to provide support for the integrated and sustainable development of fishery industries.
10. The 7th Conference of Cetacean Research and Conservation in Chinese Waters (Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan)
The 7th Conference of Cetacean Research and Conservation in Chinese Waters (Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) was held at City Hotel Xiamen On Nov 19-21. The conference was jointly organized by the Alliance for Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphin, the Third Institute of Oceanography of MNR, Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Natural Resources and Planning and NGOs. More than 150 people including the experts and scholars on cetacean studies, government officials and NGO representatives from mainland China attended the meeting in person, while the experts from Taiwan and Hong Kong as well as the experts from Japan participated in the conference online.
The conference provides a great platform for experience sharing in protecting and conserving rare and endangered marine wildlife, which has strengthened the exchanges and cooperation among mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, further promoting the development of cetacean conservation in China and playing a positive role in protecting Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins which are considered as the ecological calling card of Xiamen.
11. 2020 APEC Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning Training Workshop
The 2020 APEC Costal and Marine Spatial Planning Training Workshop was held online and offline at International Conference Hotel Xiamen on Nov 24. Under the guidance of the International Cooperation Department of MNR, the training workshop was hosted by the APEC Marine Sustainable Development Center/Third Institute of Oceanography of MNR, co-organized by the Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Ocean Development and the Coastal and Ocean Management Institute (COMI), Xiamen University. More than 80 representatives from 11 APEC economies, including Canada, Chile, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Chinese Taipei, Thailand and Vietnam, as well as the representatives from the Nature Conservancy (TNC) and other international organizations participated in the event.
