Blue Citizen Carnival held in Xiamen on Earth Day
Themed "Blue Planet, Life Home", the Blue Citizen Carnival was held at Tefang Portman Seven Stars Bay Hotel & Resort in Xiamen, East China's Fujian province on Earth Day 2023, which falls on April 22nd.
A total of eight booths were set up at the carnival, attracting more than 300 local citizens to learn about ocean-related knowledge, through various games and interactions.
In 2017, UNESCO launched the “Ocean Literacy for All: a global strategy to raise the awareness for the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of our ocean”. In 2023, UNESCO-IOC/WESTPAC established a working group, that aims to better raise public’s ocean literacy.
It is noted that "Blue Citizen" refers to the citizens who have learned about blue services from the ocean and are willing to explore the ocean, and take actions for the beautiful ocean.
In addition, a Blue Citizen seminar was held along with the carnival. Enterprises, public institutions, NGOs, and news medias were invited to attend the seminar, to discuss further implementation of the “Blue Citizen ” activities.
The Blue Citizen Carnival is jointly hosted by APEC Marine Sustainable Development Center, Third Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources and Xiamen Marine International Cooperation Center.
