China attends 2024 UN Ocean Decade Conference
A Chinese delegation led by Sun Shuxian, vice-minister of natural resources and director of the State Oceanic Administration attended the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference, which was held in Barcelona, Spain from 10-12 April 2024 local time.
The delegation participated in parallel sessions with topics ranging from maritime culture, Digital DEPTH, ocean-based solutions to climate change, to ocean observing system.
In his opening speech, Sun introduced the achievements China has made in promoting marine ecological protection, raising marine sci-tech innovation capability, better using marine resources, building the Partnership on Blue Economy, and implementing Ocean Decade Actions.
Sun called on all countries to put more efforts and resources in the effective implementation of Ocean Decade Actions and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, contributing to the building of a maritime community with a shared future.
Focused on "delivering the science we need for the ocean we want", the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference was hosted by the Government of Spain and co-organized with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (IOC/UNESCO).
The three-day event brought together the global Ocean Decade community and partners to celebrate and take stock of progress, and set joint priorities for the future.
China has formulated action plans in an active response to the UN Ocean Decade. In recent years, China has signed cooperation agreements with nearly 50 countries and international organizations, sharing its experience and approaches in marine research, environmental protection, disaster mitigation, and more.
The UN Ocean Decade Conference is held every three years, aiming to further promote Ocean Decade Actions, expand global partnerships, and strengthen marine sustainable development.
